This video shares two grueling true stories of workers who made life-altering errors with an angle grinder and a utility knife. There are pictures of the actual stapled-up hand and wrist; as well as a picture of the extremely horrifying, deep gash on the forearm. It was the hand tool (the utility knife) that caused the most damage this time. This video is about 9:00 long. If you want to show just one of these stories in your toolbox talk, check out OSHAFLIX Videos #0156 and #0157, where these stories are separated and abridged. This complete, 9:00-min. version is unabridged and also contains unique material such as more of the participants' comments from this Toolbox Tuesdays talk, as well as the OSHA Inspector's perspective, what injuries employers must report to OSHA, as well as the importance of following what the manufacturer states for instructions.
There are so many tips and meaty discussion in this video, it is fast-paced and goes by very quickly. This video calls for everyone to speak up and listen to each other when we see an unsafe act to avoid these such injuries!
TIPS ON HOW TO USE THIS VIDEO:
Always look to create curiosity even before showing the video. Ask your team to look or listen for something that is in the video. Then afterward debrief it by asking people to give the answers to what they heard or saw.
As I mentioned above, there are so many things that you could ask them to look for. Sometimes when I show a video that has so much great content, I ask people in advance to be sure to write down or remember at least two things that jumped out at them or made an impact. This usually is enough to promote great participation, comments, and even their own war stories of how they learned the hard way. Your team sharing their experiences provides great benefit and added value to your toolbox talk because people listening can easily put themselves in their coworker's shoes and become more aware of how serious the power tools and even the simple hand tools are! Finally, don't forget to give your perspective and apply the ideas presented in this video to your specific tools and environment.
