DESCRIPTION:
This is a fun, very fast-paced, attention-grabbing video, even though it is over 5-and-a-half minutes. There are a ton of photos and surprising statistics presented to raise awareness and learn a lot from regarding hearing protection for the new teenage or 20-year-old worker to the experienced veteran with decades under their belt.
Here is a summary of the teaching points presented in this video:
How is the intensity of sound is measured?
How loud is too loud?
How long is too long?
What is the quick guide that tells us when we should use our hearing protection?
Here’s a great reference to the OSHA site about that last question:
https://www.osha.gov/noise
Who has suffered more hearing loss according to studies:
Rock musicians or Classical Musicians?
What is the decibel (dB) level of orchestral instruments vs. rock instruments for the musician during a concert.
What percentage of high school seniors who played in their school band have measurable hearing loss compared to seniors who did not play in their high school band?
Here’s the reference for those statistics:
https://noiseawareness.org/info-center/noise-music-facts/
Here is the reference to Table G-16 in OSHA’s hearing standard that tells about permissible exposure based on decibel level and duration:
https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/regulations/standardnumber/1910/1910.95
What can we do to prevent and reduce our chances of hearing loss?
Set the volume as low as is comfortable to hear it.
Don’t turn up the volume so you can hear over the lawn mower!!
Use hearing protection.
Wear hearing protection when you go out dancing or to concerts and loud events.
Here are some great facts and info on decibel levels for common noise exposures and statistics:

https://noiseawareness.org/info-center/common-noise-levels/
How important is the fit of the hearing protection?
How do you properly insert ear plugs?
1. Roll them thin with clean hands.
2. Opposite arm over head to pull up ear.
3. Insert all the way into ear canal.
4. Remove slowly because it creates a seal.
What does NRR means relating to ear plugs and muffs?
Noise Reduction Rating
Why should we subtract 7 dB from the NRR to get a more accurate noise reduction rating? Here is a great reference explaining that dBA vs. dB:
https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/hearing-protection-us/support/center-for-hearing-conservation/protect/use-and-care/
Why do I only add 5 dB to the max NRR when wearing earmuffs and ear plugs together?
Government agencies dedicated to safety & health like OSHA and NOISH say to take the max NRR rating on the top of the range given and add just 5 dB when wearing earplugs and earmuffs together. That would be 33 dB + 5 dB = 38 dB.
Don’t use damaged, dirty, old or improperly-fitted hearing protection. When noises get where you need to raise your voice to be heard, use hearing protection properly at home, at work, and when having fun!
HOW TO INTRODUCE AND DEBRIEF THIS:
This is one of my favorite videos that I have made out of the first 115 videos! I love it so much because of all the meat that was packed into this short video. That fact makes cueing it up easy. I always recommend “cueing” a video up before you show it. What I mean by that is to say a few words about it to build curiosity before you show it. For this video just read one or two of the questions above in the description, and ask people to share what they learned after watching the video.
