0157 E - True Story - Utility Knife Nightmare
Injuries

DESCRIPTION:
This video shares a true story of a worker who was using a utility knife to cut irrigation piping and it all hit the fan. There is an extremely graphic picture of this man's forearm with a massive gash. An experienced worker decided to cut the irrigation piping with a utility knife instead of pipe cutters when he slipped off the piping onto his forearm. There is another story that happened at this same company in OSHAFLIX Video #0156 - Savage Grinder. Be sure to check that one out. Also, the unabridged video containing both stories and more unique content is found in OSHAFLIX Video #0233 - True Stories - Grinder - Knife - Toolbox Tuesdays.
Steve challenges the supervisors and non-supervisors alike to use the correct tool and use it properly. To be accountable to one another. Everyone should speak up and receive each other's reminder when we see unsafe habits creep into our work practices.
TIPS ON HOW TO USE THIS VIDEO:
Always look to create curiosity even before showing the video. Ask your team to look or listen for something that is in the video. Then afterward debrief it by asking people to give the answers to what they heard or saw.
In this particular video, there is something very comical and attention-grabbing at the 1:40 mark. So before showing the video, ask your crew to look for something very out of the ordinary at about the 1:40 mark in this video.
After you show the video, ask your crew to call out the out of the ordinary thing. At the 1:40 mark, there is a man with a drink in his hand seated the forks of a forklift as they are elevating! Also, ask what your team learned or what stood out to them. So often I have found that simple questions like these bring forth great comments and participation in my training. Also, be prepared to make your final comments regarding what stood out to you and how you can apply lessons learned from this video to the specific hand tools you use.
