3m 35s
DESCRIPTION:
This video shares a true story of a worker who was using an angle grinder to cut wood siding and it all went wrong. There are two pictures of the hand and wrist with myriad staples. A worker with 10 years experience was using the angle grinder with only one hand and with the guard removed. It hit a piece of metal and then kicked up and ran all around his hand and wrist. About 40 seconds into this video, Steve declares, "This isn't as bad as the next story." That next story is found in OSHAFLIX Video #0157 - Utility Knife Nightmare. Be sure to check that one out. Also, the unabridged video containing both stories and more unique content is found in OSHAFLIX Video #0233 - True Stories - Grinder - Knife - Toolbox Tuesdays.
Steve challenges the audience to follow the manufacturers instructions and not to modify tools or use them for another purpose other than their intended one. Additionally, this video calls for everyone to speak up and listen to each other when we see an unsafe act.
TIPS ON HOW TO USE THIS VIDEO:
Always look to create curiosity even before showing the video. Ask your team to look or listen for something that is in the video. Then afterward debrief it by asking people to give the answers to what they heard or saw.
I suggest saying something like this, "This video tells of a worker who got dozens of staples on his wrist and hand from improperly using an angle grinder. Be sure to listen for how many years experience this guys had, and how many ways he was misusing the tool."
After you show the video, ask your crew to give those answers. Also, ask what they learned or what stood out to them. These simple questions often yield great comments and participation when I do training. Also, be prepared to make your final comments regarding what stood out to you and how you can apply lessons learned from this video to the specific power tools you use.
