Respiratory Protection

DESCRIPTION:
This video takes you through the basics by repeatedly asking “Betcha didn’t know…” There are great pictures and short clips to demonstrate the proper daily cleaning and fit of the respirator. The questions asked and answered are:
1. Betcha didn’t know that men must shave before each shift for a tight-fitting, half-face or full-face respirator?
2. Betcha didn’t know that respirators must be cleaned and wiped down with a non-alcohol wipe after every break, lunch, bathroom run, and at end of the day?
3. Betcha didn’t know that respirators must always be stored in a plastic sealable bag or bin, in a dry area, away from temperature extremes, and out of the direct sunlight when you go on break, lunch, to the bathroom, and at the end of the day?
4. Betcha didn’t know that an employer must always try to avoid the use of a respirator by attempting to clean the air first.
5. If the air cannot be cleaned, then betcha didn’t know that the employer must do the following three things before they allow an employee to use a respirator:
a. Create a written respirator program/policy specific to their company and the contaminate at hand.
b. Have each employee medically cleared to wear this device that makes the employee’s heart and lungs work so much harder in order to breathe.
c. Provide hands-on, equipment-specific training including the fit test to get the proper seal.
HOW TO INTRODUCE AND DEBRIEF THIS:
Before showing a video, I always like to tell the group to look for something so that they will pay more attention. When multiple eyes are viewing something, we usually get great feedback and more insight. I suggest telling your crew or asking them one of the following:
Look for Steve’s beard and whether you think he actually does need to shave if he was to wear a respirator, or what important tip did Steve leave out of this video that you know is extremely important? This could include anything, but perhaps people would talk about the cartridge or filter change-out schedule. This video is not exhaustive, but it helps you bring up the important points in your training or toolbox safety talk, whether they appear in the video or not. The important thing is to get your team talking about safety. Draw on their experience and/or questions.
