DESCRIPTION:
In this video, Steve gives a kind of Fall Protection Awareness Quiz via a rapid-fire Q&A where he pauses and gives people a moment to think, then he gives the answer. Before Steve gets to the quiz, he talks about OSHA’s two books of safety standards that apply to just about all places of business: Construction and General Industry.
The General Industry standards apply when there is a permanent building such as hospitals, restaurants, supermarkets, retail stores, power plants, manufacturing, facilities maintenance, offices, dentist offices: any permanent facility.
The Construction standards apply when you install, demo, renovate, paint or decorate in the field or at a facility.
Here are the quiz questions for your reference:
1. What is meant by the term “Fall Protection”?
2. True or False: OSHA mandates fall protection be used when a worker is exposed to a fall at or above 4 feet in General Industry. True!
3. True of False: OSHA mandates fall protection be used when a worker is exposed to a fall at or above 4 feet in Construction. False! The threshold for construction work is 6 feet or more above a lower level.
4. True or False: On average from 2016 - 2021, workers in the U.S. fell through a skylight and died every 29 days. True.

(The 29-day figure was from the last website on the above list. That document reports 75 deaths through skylights in a 6-year period. That is 12.5 deaths per year. Steve then divided those 12.5 deaths per year into 365 days/year to equal every 29 days that someone falls through a skylight and dies in the U.S. on the job.)

6. Falling objects is a major concern not only for employee safety, but for the general public. What are some ways to prevent falling objects?
To finish up, Steve defines, explains and gives some examples of one of the greatest ways to think about prevention: The Hierarchy of Controls.
Falls are the leading cause of death in construction and the second leading cause of death across all industries, but they can be prevented. Think, plan, train, communicate, take action and you will go home safety to your family after each work day!
