DESCRIPTION:
This video is the combination of part of OSHAFLIX Video #0006 E - Back - Lifting Safety - 8 Keys, and OSHAFLIX Video #0158 E - Back Safety - Heavy Lifting - 9 More Tips. Video #0006 E includes about one minute of additional content including the explanation of Steve's T-Shirt that contains a lame saying regarding Safety & Health that we have often bought into. Also, if you wanted to just discuss the T-Shirt’s lame saying, you can show your crew OSHAFLIX Video #0012 E - T-Shirt - We’ve Always Done It That Way.
Here are the first 11 Tips from the first half of this video:
1.) Keep Back Straight.
2.) Don’t Twist Back.
3.) Clear Path.
4.) Know the Weight.
5.) No Jerky Movements.
6.) Is the Load Evenly Distributed?
7.) Take Care of Your Hands.
8.) Lift with Legs.
9.) Communication/Team Lift.
10.) Use Lifting Belt.
11.) Load at Waist Level.
Below are the back 9 (from the second half of this video):
1.) Opposite Corners.
2.) Get Help from Someone Else.
3.) Flex Your Core.
4.) Don’t Hold Your Breath.
5.) Hire a Moving Company.
6.) Stretch.
7.) Exercise.
8.) Hydration.
9.) Use Equipment: Pallet Jack, Forklift, Airsled®, Dollies, Carts, Lifting Straps, and Suction Cups.
TIPS ON HOW TO USE THIS VIDEO:
Before showing any video in your toolbox talk, be sure to cue it up to create curiosity so people pay attention. Ask your team to look or listen for something that is in the video. Then afterward debrief it by asking people to give the answers to what they heard or saw.
Before showing this video, tell your crew to watch carefully and identify one tip for safe lifting that they never heard. After showing the video, ask what they learned that was new. Also, asl them for other tips that the video didn’t mention. People love to be smarter than the video. And for sure, this video is not exhaustive, there are more tips for back safety. These simple tactics often yield great comments and participation when I conduct training. And as always, be prepared to make your final comments regarding what stood out to you and how you can apply lessons learned from this video to your work environment.
